Why I Hate FHE

Monday is not my favorite day for many reasons. One of those reasons is the fact that I hate Family Home Evening. I don't hate my family and I don't hate spending time with them but I hate the formality of the evening; the scripture, prayer, lesson/activity and of course, everyone always expects a treat. All this piled on top of everything else that must be done on a school/week night. It's too busy and stressful.  And really, we can only justify game/movie night so many times.  Every Monday afternoon I find myself hoping against hope that the kids will forget that it's family night. They don't.

For some reason, I suppose it's the Adversary working on us, when we make an effort to have a lesson, there is always so much contention leading up to that point. It never fails, somebody doesn't like what I fixed for dinner and that child sits at the table WAY too long complaining and whining because he/she knows there are no treats at our house if one does not eat one's dinner.

Then there is the issue of hurrying through homework, chores and baths so we can maintain an appropriate bedtime. Someone always drags their feet through these processes as well. And, it never fails, somebody always ends up mad or in tears and refuses to participate.

If it were up to me, this is one thing we would not do on a regular basis. But alas, my husband (and kids) are better than me so we do it. But I hate it.

At least you do it! Its not our strong point. We had it tonight but most weeks it just doesn't happen. Its an area we really need to work on.

We love FHE. We have it every week. The only thing is, is that we don´t do it on Monday night. We changed it to Friday nights, and if some activity comes up that night we do it Saturday night. It works for us.

I've been terrible about it. so something is better then nothing. and chantelle has a point. who says fhe has to be on monday? Start assigning kids to be in charge. lessons. and all. maybe that will help out a bit. go you for doing it consistently.

I found a mistake that you made. Instead of "there faces," it's supposed to be "their faces." Notice the change. :)

I meant to leave that last comment on the next post.
We keep it simple. We don't spend any time preparing for it. We pick a topic on the fly. Coordinate the music to it and have a five minute lesson. Treats don't usually make an appearance either cause well I don't want them expecting it.
Growing up, my family tended to have FHE on Sunday nights. Mondays were usually too hectic, or none of us were home. (Due to sports, etc.) So...I'm all for changing the day if Monday's don't work out well. I don't think FHE is supposed to stress us out. It's supposed to bring us closer together. Just my opinion. (That being said, let me add, we are not very good in my home, with having FHE each week...so congrats!)
